ABOUT
My work is predominantly focused on people and landscapes that hold significance to me. By working with a considered, patient, technical approach to create a convincing final result I aim for each image to act as a vessel that is multi layered so that both realism and nostalgia are tangible.
I take care that my work establishes me as an artist sitting comfortably both in the past or in the present. I try to capture the essence of what I find naturally beautiful and feel emotionally attached to in both my landscape and portrait work. Although I often draw on mythological stories and themes of antiquity for inspiration, I intend for the influence of such imagery to be subliminal as I believe it is more effective to hint at narrative, but ultimately leave the reading of my images open to interpretation.
My methodology is something I put at the forefront of my practice and one of my rules is that working from life is essential. Like putting together a puzzle, I work over each of my paintings for long periods of time, which results in my coming to associate with my subjects intimately. The process of developing each portrait usually results in a mutual decision with my sitters, based on a series of discussions and experiments involving various poses, lighting arrangements and sharing sources for influence. Getting the proportions correct and underlying drawing is the most important stage for me before development and any use of colour. I aim for my excitement in response to either working from a real environment or person to be visible but in a not so obvious way, rather an intricate mesh of brushstrokes that assume a polished image.
At this stage I am working on the pairing of figures with landscapes as separate pieces, but linked by simple themes. I am keen on the process of analyzing natural forms but imbuing multiple perspectives and subtle changes from imagination. The intimacy of focusing on single forms over long periods of time with this concept in mind means that I can aim to achieve a realism that is not simply flat or photographic.
Continuing to depict that which is not associated with any specific time is one of my priorities for future work as well as being genuine with my emotional connection to subject that others will hopefully relate to. I also intend for the complexity of subject to develop gradually in conjunction to my technical proficiency so as not to sacrifice quality.
